The future of a retail site to be built on disused land at Hayle is up in the air after new plans were rejected by the town council.

Planning permission has already been granted for three units at Foundry Yard, but now developers are looking to scrap this in favour of one larger retail unit.

The site, opposite the new Asda on South Quay, is owned by Peveril Securities Ltd who have applied to Cornwall Council for a change in conditions.

The amendment to the original scheme would also include up to 30 per cent of floor space dedicated to the sale of convenience goods, as well as 70 car parking spaces.

Under the new plans, part of the yard, which is designated as the site for Goonvean engine, would be moved to another location.

Although a potential client has not been named, a spokesman on behalf of Peveril Securities Ltd said the business would create up to 50 jobs in Hayle.

But Hayle Town Council has objected to the change in plans on grounds it is unclear the effect one large store would have on the town centre.

Hayle mayor, Graham Coad, said: "Doubtless every new shop affects some other shop, but we wanted information from the official retail survey on how Hayle would be affected.

"The council could not approve it with the low level of information given."

Gary Cartmell, who represents Hayle Harbour developers, said the size of the site would be reduced from 21,000sq ft to 15,000sq ft, roughly half the size of the Asda supermarket, under the proposed plans.

He said several high-end discount stores were interested in the location, but would not be drawn on who the interested parties were.

"They are looking around Hayle at other locations but we want to bring them into the town centre," he said. "No one will sign up until we have an agreement."

Mr Cartmell said the architecture would be in a similar design scheme to the Asda development on South Quay.

He said they had approached the council for an extension on the planning application to try to address concerns raised by the town council.
