A badger has been shot dead at dunes near a Cornish beach.

Pictures have been shared showing the dead animal near a popular holiday park, near Perranporth.

Last month, Cornwall Live reported how the famous setts at Penhale were under threat after Defra announced the dunes were among 11 new badger cull zones.

Altogether there are 40 cull zones in England as the Government attempts to stamp out cattle TB, which, it is claimed, is spread by badgers.

Traps have been set by a local farmer to capture or kill the animals in the dunes below the holiday park.

The holiday park is privately owned and not included in the cull area.

Yesterday, Noreen Brosnan shared pictures of the animal’s bloodied body on Facebook.

She said she believes it is the third or fourth badger that has been found dead on Perran Sands in the last month.

Angered by the cull, she wrote: “Come here on holiday and see murdered wildlife. Badger killers at work.”

Last month a spokesman for environmental group Cornwall Against the Badger Culls said thousands of pounds had been spent to accommodate the sett for the tourists.

He said: "The area of special scientific interest where the Dune Badgers live has some legal protection, however traps are being set all around the dunes by the Government licensed operators who live next to the dunes.

"Many thousands of people, especially children will be sad to hear of the demise of famous Sand Badgers."

Previously holiday park vowed to do all it could to protect badgers on its land.

A Haven spokesperson said: "We were sad to discover a dead badger on Sunday afternoon which we believe had been deliberately killed.

"We have not, nor would we sanction, any badger culling to take place on Haven Perran Sands. Any activity close to the park but not on Haven land would be subject to licence by Natural England. We support the wildlife living close to park and continue to encourage our guests to respect the animals we share our beautiful areas with.

"We have reported the incident to Cornwall Police and will continue to assist with their investigation."

According to the Badger Action Network, 67,259 badgers have been killed around the country in the Government's badger cull policy since 2013.

Defra and Natural England approved the 11 new badger cull zones as part of government efforts to control tuberculosis in cattle.

In Cornwall the only areas which are definitely not being culled is the land west of the A30 from Hayle to Penzance and the vaccination zone at St Stephens

Cornwall Against the Badger Culls said it was important for anyone coming across cages in areas such as a woodlands or the edge of fields in these two zones not to disturb them as they are used as part of the vaccination programme.

Announcing the extended cull areas, Farming Minister and Camborne and Redruth MP George Eustice said: "Bovine TB remains the greatest animal health threat to the UK, costing taxpayers over £100 million every year as well as causing devastation and distress for hard-working farmers and rural communities.

"There is no single measure that will provide an answer to beating this disease. That is why we have always been committed to a multi-pronged approach including proactive badger control as well as other tools such as tighter cattle controls, improved biosecurity and badger vaccination.

Badgers at Perran Sands, Perranporth are now facing extinction after the area became part of a new cull zone approved by the Government

"Our strategy in combatting the disease now has an opportunity to look at different methods as part of our response to the Godfray Review. We will fully respond to this review in the near future."
