VEALL, ARCHIBALD, d. 19/09/1918, Age 41, Purser, Mercantile Marine, S.S. "Barrister" (Liverpool), SON OF RICHARD AND E. H. VEALL; HUSBAND OF NELLIE ANN VEALL (NEE SUTHERLAND), OF 16, RUFFORD RD., POULTON, CHESHIRE. BORN AT HAYLE, CORNWALL.


The BARRISTER in question was a 4,952-ton steam cargo ship completed in April 1916 as Yard No.682 by Russell & Co., Port Glasgow and launched as the SAINT HUGO (Official No.137498) for British & Foreign SS. Co., Ltd. (Rankin, Gilmour & Co., Ltd.), Liverpool

In 1917 she was renamed BARRISTER when sold to Charente SS. Co., Ltd. Liverpool with T. & J. Harrison the managers

She was torpedoed and sunk by UB 64, on 19 September 1918, 9 miles W ½ N of Chicken Rock, while on a voyage from Glasgow & Liverpool - West Indies, general cargo & mails

loss of 30 lives
