Success for west Cornwall residents at Wall Music Festival
Posted: May 28, 2014
|SEVERAL west Cornwall residents had success at the annual Wall Music Festival in Hayle.
Held in Wall Methodist Church, the five-day festival has classes in woodwind, brass, strings and piano, as well as vocal solos and choir.
Hannah Pascoe, of Newlyn, known for her performances with the Fishwives' Choir, won the light opera class and was awarded the most outstanding adult singer trophy.
Fellow Newlyn singer Jude Le Grice came top of the men's vocal solo and under 16 vocal soloist Briony Watkins, of Pendeen, was also awarded.
The choir from St Piran's School, Hayle, won the school choir class, and five children from there also picked up awards for spoken verse.
Other schools that were successful include Cape Cornwall for senior school choir and Bodriggy Academy in Hayle and St Ives Ensemble in the woodwind ensemble class.
Brendan Moran, of Praze-an-Beeble, took two strings titles, including the intermediate string ensemble with Aiden Moran.
Thomas Royle, of Penzance, achieved grade three and four strings.
Winners in the woodwind section include Bronnen Veal, of St Ives; Rosie Edwards, of St Just; and Romano Bezzi Codetta, of Penzance.
Awards also went to Local Vocalz, from Hayle; Sebastian Ashbury-Semmens, of St Madderns School; Hayle's Jennifer Garraway; and Kerenza Hurr, of Angarrack.
Adjudicating the festival for the first time was David Patrick, a fellow at The British and International Federation of Festivals.
Wall Music Festival secretary, Hilary Mock, said: "We are known as 'the friendly festival' and, as always, were pleased to welcome back some familiar faces as well as some new ones this year."
The festival was held from Tuesday, May 13, to Saturday, May 17, when a concert was put on by winning performers and special trophies were presented.
Harry Flint, of Leedstown, was awarded the most promising under-18 player in the brass section, with the equivalent in the woodwind going to Romano Bezzi Coddetta and strings to Aiden Moran.
