• If you had said, 20 years ago, that Hayle has the potential to become a regional shopping centre you would have been ridiculed. With M&S prospering, supermarkets jostling to build new stores in Hayle and Penzance possibly giving them the cold shoulder, there is chance for the retail ‘centre of gravity’ to drift from Penzance towards Hayle. This is not good for Penzance but Penzance has a habit of ‘shooting itself in the foot’. The loss of the M&S store opportunity in Penzance is now generally recognized as a strategic error. Even as I write this I hear that foot blasting shotgun being reloaded (both barrels this time) to fend off Sainsbury’s from Eastern Green. This would be a particularly injurious but spectacular blast as not only will Penzance lose a store many in Penwith would welcome (if only to make Tesco up their game) but it will almost certainly destroy BIH who desperately need to sell the site to repay multi-million pound loans to the Bank of Ireland that fall due in 2011. I hardly need to tell you where Andrew George MP sits on this matter – his trigger finger must be itching.

• This matter will be decided on planning rules and guidelines, as the planning law and goverment guidelines dictate.
  
  Which BRAND of supermarket any of us prefer doesn't come into it much, it's all about which actual SITE best conforms to the guidelines.
  
  I'm not saying that's right, or an ideal situation, just flagging up that thats the way things are.
  
  If a site on or near an existing shopping "centre" is available, the rules state that site should have a higher priority than an edge of town or out of town option.
  Many of the relavant rules and laws date back to preferences of the last (Labour) government from the mid 1990s and haven't been changed yet.

• I live in Hayle and I feel that if there is going to be another supermarket, it should be 'out of town'.
  
  It would be a tragedy if South Quay or Carnsew Quay had a supermarket built on them. South quay has the potential for being truly beautiful and developed in a way that is in keeping with the history and heritage of the town. I don't think anyone could disagee that a supermarket on either site would be total out of keeping, not to mention the traffic chaos which would surely result.
  
  Therefore, the only sensible proposals are for Sainsbury on Marsh Lane or Asda at the rugby club. My vote would be for the later.

• If an asda is chosen it will ruin the local shops. At least with a Morristons store they sell no cloths or other non food products.I also like their in store fish mongers and butchers where the staff actually know what they are talking about. Its would also seem the best site for the town.

• I notice folk moan about the lack of jobs in Cornwall,(outside of seasonal tourist jobs).
  
  Although retail work is not famous for high salaries, it offers, nonetheless, full-time employment and part-time work that could fit in with family committments.

• I think it would be a good idea to have an Asda around hayle. I live in St Ives and in the summer tesco caters for the tourists and never seems to have anything in stock that residents need. The nearest asda is located in Falmouth a 45min drive from here, as long as they can keep up with the tourists as well as us I don't see a problem, Even the pz tesco is not that big with the nearest decent size store being Pool a 20 minute drive away. You cant really do a full weeks shop at lidl or Aldi and the Co-op is just overpriced!

• Thanks for clearing that up Christopher. I think the article is just generally poor as I read the line "Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda and ING supermarkets are all looking to build stores at Hayle, West Cornwall" and it didn't make much sense to me. I guess with more local knowledge on the matter this would be obvious.
  Hopefully the best application will be successful.

• Hayle has a population of about 8/9000 and already has the Co-op and Lidl.. Tesco are at St.ives, Penzance, Camborne, Pool , Redruth, oh!, and Helston and is it the place of ''lowest income'' in the land. Greed and saturation seems to be the objective.

• Chickenpea - in response to your comments - although I am now a bit further away, I am from Hayle and my family are still there. Moreover, I am not offering my opinion (for it hardly counts in any case) on whether or not Hayle needs a supermarket, I was simply clarifying that in any event it will not be getting four supermarkets. i was simply trying to point out that this was a slightly misleading article.
  
  Neil, in reponse to your comment - as I understand it, ING is the owner/developer of the South Quay site and is hoping to secure planning consent to attract an operator. Given that Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys are already promoting their plans, I think we can all make an educated guess as to which operator might be linked to the South Quay (ING) proposals.

• I notice that not one of the comments that have been made are actually from people in Hayle. I live there and work in Camborne. When I need to get shopping I go to Tesco in Camborne or the Extra at Pool. Why? Beacuse Hayle has M&S, nice for a treat but I'm not paid enough to weekly shop there. Co-op, fine but little choice and in the summer it is PACKED with tourists (I have waited for 20 mins in a line to get to the till!) or Lidl again fine but not a weekly shop place (or quality, but I do get bargins there). I shop in the town as often as I can. I love the local Cafes and ice cream and enjoy living in Hayle but I'm sorry WE DO need a proper mid range supermarket that stops people like me shopping elsewhere on their lunch break.

• exactly Christopher, well said. Just sounds like a typical local press article to stir things up a bit and cause panic. I've heard of sainsburys, asda and morrisons, but am still confused about the fourth supermarket being "ING". Can somebody clarify this please?

• Clearly there is no prospect of four supermarkets coming to the town. It is simply a four-horse race to secure planning permission. The first operator to do so will build a supermarket - the remaining three will then turn their attentions elsewhere. This article is somewhat misleading and detracts from the real issue at hand i.e. do we want a big box supermarket in the middle of a World Heritage Site, or would we rather one in a more sensitive location?

• @ Steph - do you think cornwall only exists for people like yourself to come on holiday here? Do you realise that people also live here, and that actually, supermarkets are quite handy to have for those who live here? You are still able to relax and lay on beaches whilst you are here, whether there's a supermarket or not. As for those of us who live here, we'll be getting on with our everyday lives rather like you probably do in immingham

• How sad to ruin Hayle which is so unspoiled and uncorrupted, these schemes should be diverted to Camborne which needs the development , leave Hayle alone.

• I know i come on holiday to cornwall every year and places need supermarkets it is for people going on holiday not going on shopping trips it is supposed to be a holiday destination to relax and lay on beaches visit places eat in cafes and enjoy what the area has to offer it is the greedy supermarkets want to get planning permission wherever they can and spoil it for future generations sw cornwall will be renamed welcome to supermarkets within cornwall not south west cornwall holiday makers should not have to put up with this and spend money in holiday areas not the supermarkets all the time and this is daft do not let it happen

• What on earth does a town like Hayle want with four supermarkets? But then their wallets are open so planning permission is a given. Goodbye to any character the town may have had. Supermarkets have their place but they are creating a monopoly whereby people, thinking they have more choice, are getting less. They are more of a curse than a blessing. They are the main cause of dairy farmers running at a loss or going out of business altogether and much of the booze fuelled violence can be laid at their door for selling booze below cost price, which should be illegal.
