An emergency rescue operation was carried out in Hayle this morning after a woman fell from the quay.

Emergency services were initially told that she had fallen from South
Quay into the water, but later discovered the tide was out and she in
fact fell five metres (16 foot) onto hardstanding.

The 999 call was first made at 11.01am today (Saturday), with
paramedics, coastguards and firefighters from Cornwall Rescue Service
sent to the incident.

Special water rescue equipment from Falmouth and Penzance was also called in, due to the belief the woman was in the water.

However, when they arrived it was found she had landed onto the hard surface.

The woman was rescued from the base of the quay and left in the care
of the ambulance service. No details have been given about her condition
or whether she sustained any injuries.

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire
fighters from Tolvaddon, along with specialist water rescue equipment
from Falmouth and Penzance, attended a call to a female who had fallen
five metres from South Quay, Hayle into water.

“On arrival crews confirmed that the tide in the quay was out and the casualty was on hardstanding.

“A triple extension ladder was used to access the casualty who was assessed by paramedics, coastguard and firefighters.

“The casualty was extricated and left in the care of [the] ambulance.”
